Squaring Up

Squaring Up

We Watched Our Mothers

Women have been taught all of our lives to put others first. We watched our mothers and grandmothers do it. One of the greatest compliments is “they always put others first!” But why? Putting everyone else first with the expense of their own happiness… Is that really a good trait to have?

Is it possible that their values are not your values?

I would never wish for my daughter to feel that her happiness comes last. In her journey, I wish her nothing BUT happiness. Whatever that looks like for her! Wear it unapologetically, loud and proud.

Not Very Ladylike

So why are we, as women, taught that pushing our happiness aside to please others is a good thing? While boys are taught to be aggressive and dominant. You can imagine the struggle women have in the business world squaring up against some of these men.

As a new business owner with employees, I have had to channel my alter ego DAN (introduced in an earlier blog) because I struggle hard to see myself in an authoritative role. I struggle to find my assertive side. I’ve been told it’s not feminine or ladylike and recently when I did (very mildly) assert myself to an assertive/aggressive male, I was met with “Oh, princess.”

Let's Go, Punk

Can you see the flames shooting from my ears… can you?

He would have never talked to DAN that way. That one was just for me!
